25 Year Study Points to fruits and vegetables

CHICAGO - A large study offers the strongest evidence yet that a diet the government recommends for lowering blood pressure can save people from heart attack and stroke.

Researchers followed more than 88,000 healthy women for almost 25 years. They examined their food choices and looked at how many had heart attacks and strokes. Those who fared best had eating habits similar to those recommended by the government to stop high blood pressure.

The plan, called the DASH diet, favors fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk and plant-based protein over meat.

Women with those eating habits were 24 percent less likely to have a heart attack and 18 percent less likely to have a stroke than women with more typical American diets.

Those are meaningful reductions since these diseases are so common. About two in five U.S. women at age 50 will eventually develop cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attacks and strokes. Women in the study were in their mid-30s to late 50s when the research began in 1980.

Previous research has shown this kind of diet can help prevent high blood pressure and cholesterol, which both can lead to heart attacks.

The new study appears in Monday’s Archives of Internal Medicine.

People might think, “I don’t have high blood pressure, so I don’t have to follow it,” said Simmons College researcher Teresa Fung, the study’s lead author. However, the results suggest, she said, that “even healthy people should get on it.”

About 15,000 women in the study had diets that closely resembled the low blood pressure diet. They ate about twice as many fruits, vegetables and grains as the estimated 18,000 women whose diets more closely resembled typical American eating habits.

Although the study only followed women, Fung said men would probably get similar benefits from the approach.

The study was limited because it merely tracked the women and their habits for 24 years. That’s a less rigorous method than randomly assigning equal groups of women different diets and comparing results. But that would be extremely difficult to do for such a long time.

Given that limitation, Dr. Laura Svetkey, director of Duke University’s hypertension center, said the study provides the best evidence yet of important long-term benefits from a low blood pressure diet.

“It’s nice to see research that really is aimed at helping people with prevention in a very practical way,” Svetkey said. She noted that the DASH diet, which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, is available free on the National Institutes of Health Web site. The study was funded with NIH grants.

Dr. Nieca Goldberg, medical director of New York University’s Women’s Heart Program, said many patients would rather take a pill than adjust their eating habits. But, Goldberg said, “I always point out to my patients, if you make these changes in your lives, it could … keep you off medication” in the long run.

“There has to be a greater emphasis on the way we live our lives,” she said.

Heartfelt Thought for Valentine’s

Valentine’s Day may bring to mind heart-shaped boxes filled with chocolates, but please take just a moment today to consider the state of your real heart.

As women, we are somewhat protected from heart disease, at least until menopause. That’s one of the wonderful attributes of having estrogen coursing through our veins. This hormone keeps up our HDL (”good”) cholesterol. Over time, though, especially after menopause, our risk of heart attacks catches up with that of men.

Because more women are living longer, cardiovascular disease has actually surpassed cancer as the No. 1 cause of death among women. According to The American Heart Association, in 2004 around 460,000 women died from heart disease in the United States, compared to 270,000 from all types of cancer (of which 41,000 were from breast cancer).

Since cancer screening and treatment for women have advanced so far, we now need to focus on better screening and prevention of heart disease in women. This goal becomes even more important as our collective girth grows and time for healthy meals and exercise dwindles.

I don’t know about you but, personally, I have yet to sign up for that yoga class, and last month I managed to make exactly one home-cooked dinner. Unfortunately, my own poor habits are all too common. I just happen to be lucky to have genetics on my side - no one in my family has had a heart attack or stroke in their golden years (yet).

During my stint of working in a hospital’s Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, I met plenty of folks who had suffered the agony of a heart attack or stroke or, worse, were admitted again and again to the unit for specialized chronic cardiac care.

Beyond these disorders are all the other associated blood vessel problems, such as narrowing of the carotid artery by plaques (carotid stenosis) or a bulge in the wall of the aorta (aortic aneurysm), conditions that require risky surgeries to prevent life-threatening events.

I can still hear the words of a patient who had severe heart disease: “I wish I could go back and take that cholesterol medicine to have avoided all this.”

The medicines mentioned by this patient, called statins, are certainly capable of changing the future of heart disease. They have been proven to reduce the rate of first and repeat heart attacks. But, starting right now, you can take other, more straightforward steps to avoid such an outcome yourself.

So when you see those adorable silk chocolate boxes this holiday, be reminded that you can care for your own precious heart!

Omega-3s Make Headlines, no kidding!

Res-Q Manufacturers N3 Inc, report:

“For years, doctors and scientists have know the heart benefits of omega-3. Now, researchers have discovered numerous other benefits.

Omega-3 makes headlines:

“Omega-3 fatty acids protect against diabetes” - ABC News

“Omega-3 provides the necessary restoration of the oil needed to maintain a youthful and healthy appearance.” - Associated Content

“Getting Thin on Fats: Omega-3” - American Chronicle

“Adding omega-3 to statin therapy reduces triglyceride levels, without reasing LDL” - WebMD

“Omega-3s may reduce Alzheimer’s risk” - WebMD

Res-Q 1250 is highly distilled so that only Omega-3s are packed into our capsules. No fish parts or extraneous materials. Try this test. Take an el-cheapo Omega-3 capsule from any other source, this is telling especially if you have a 300mgs of EPA / DHA in a 1000mg capsule.

Freeze the capsule overnight in the freezer, for at least 8 hours. Cut it open the next day. If you have milky solids in the capsule what you are looking at is “fish parts.” If the contents are liquid and clear then you have a highly refined omega-3 capsule.

One customer tried this and wrote in that his Res-Q 1250 capsule was liquid and clear after 2 days in the freezer. That’s what we mean by “pure.’ His brother’s capsule from another company was more than half milky solid after 8 hours.

So there are omega-3s, then there are pure omega-3s. Res-Q 1250 is special and can be relied upon for all of the above!

Scientists believe that high red wine consumption in France may be the primary reason for their longevity. Resveratrol, a compound found in the skins of grapes is the ingredient in red wine that has been linked with multiple health benefits to provide support for a healthy cardiovascular system, help maintain the normal function of the brain and promote overall good health and wellness. One serving is equal to 70 glasses of red wine.

Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant that is produced by some plants to protect against environmental stresses. Perhaps the most notable producer of resveratrol is the grapevine, which produces large amounts of resveratrol in the skins of grapes to protect against fungal diseases and sun damage. It is therefore no suprise that wine (in particular red wine - which is fermented with grape skins) has some of the highest levels of resveratrol out of any natural food.

While it has been know for thousands of years that wine is a healthful drink (thus the old Roman saying In Vino Sanitas‘- In wine there is health), the scientific community started taking wine’s health benefits seriously after 60 Minutes reported the famous ‘French Parodox’ study in which people in France were less likely to die of heart attacks than Americans despite similar high fat diets. The study concluded that the relatively large amounts of red wine consumed by the French protected their hearts.

From the French Paradox study numerous other studies were launched to attempt to identify compounds responsible for red wine’s apparent health benefits. From these studies the compound that gained by far the largest amount of interest was Resveratrol – AND RIGHTLY SO! Recent studies have concluded that:

  • Adding resveratrol to the diet of yeast, fruit flies, worms, and a species of fish increased their life spans up to 70%, 29%, 24%, & 50% respectively.
  • Resveratrol made fat related deaths drop 31% in obese mice. The resveratrol fed obese mice also performed much better in movement and agility tests than obese mice not fed resveratrol.
  • Mice fed resveratrol had 100% more endurance than mice not fed resveratrol (i.e. they were able to run twice as far on a treadmill).
  • Resveratrol inhibits blood platelet aggregation that can lead to dangerous clots that can cause heart attacks and strokes.
  • Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant that can help prevent cell damage caused by free radicals (free radicals are unstable atoms caused in part by pollution, sunlight, and our bodies natural burning of fat that can lead to cancer, aging, and brain degeneration)
  • Resveratrol has been proven to fight cancer in vitro at all three stages; (1) initiation, (2) promotion, (&) progression.

What if I must take a statin?

Recommended by Cardiovascular Surgeon, Dr. Frederic Vagnini, M.D., FACS

In a recent study published in the Lancet medical journal, 18,645 people were randomly assigned to receive omega-3 fatty acids every day, plus a statin (cholesterol reducing drug). Another group was given a statin alone.

After 4 1/2 years, the researchers found a 19% reduction in major coronary events including sudden cardiac death, among patients taking omega-3. Patients taking omega-3 also had 19% fewer non-fatal events—including non-fatal heart attack, unstable angina and coronary revascularization—than people taking statins alone.

The study shows that taking the omega-3 fatty acids with a statin can greatly reduce your chance for heart disease. Omega-3 is one of the most beneficial nutrients you can include in your diet. In addition to the cardiovascular benefits, omega-3 has also been found to help improve memory and brain function, reduce allergies, improve mood, reduce symptoms of PMS and improve skin and hair health.

Res-Q® 1250 Omega-3 supplement

It is almost impossible to obtain enough EPA and DHA from the foods you eat. That is why supplementing with omega-3 is so important to your health. Res-Q® 1250 is the purest, most potent, pharmaceutical grade omega-3 available. Manufactured under stringent guidelines, Res-Q® 1250 undergoes an extensive purification process to ensure that there is no trace of contaminants such as mercury.

“Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to be quite beneficial for triglyceride reduction, arrhythmias, irregular heartbeat and to help reduce the incidence of sudden cardiac death. I recommend Res-Q® 1250 to all of my patients who take medication to reduce their cholesterol. This product is great for everyone who is concerned about heart health.”

Editor’s Note: CoQ10 is another supplement that can offset some of the negative effects of statins. Statins reduce cholesterol production in the liver. But they also reduce the production of CoQ10 a catalyst needed by the body for production of energy in the muscles (including the heart muscle) CoQ10 is contained in Res-Q Cell Power.

Another important distinction to understand is that statin pharmaceutical drugs were “discovered” from studying a chinese herb called red rice yeast. This herb has been used for 6000 years in China. It is sold as a dietary supplement on our website for $19.95. We have a long list of clients who have successfully used red rice yeast to bring their total cholesterol down below 200 in a very short amount of time. We always recommend CoQ10 with red rice yeast. Is Cholesterol Really the Enemy?

I am going to be blunt here. I have been studying Omega-3s, heart disease, cholesterol and statins for 2 years now. I am not a doctor, not a scientist, and I got a ‘C’ in high school chemistry. I am more than likely just like you - a laymen in this field. And I am going to throw down the gauntlet: Don’t believe a word I say.

I want you to start asking questions. Yep, just like all the commericials on the TV say, “Ask your doctor about…” But here is the question I have been asking for 2 years and finally, finally am beginning to see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

It’s about this cholesterol doctrine or dogma, the action of Omega-3s on cholesterol, etc. It is certainly not what you see on the television. So last week I am at a trade show with all the new health products and I run into a gentleman, a pharmacologist, who is also an inventor of nutraceutical supplements. After one hour of being schooled, I have some possible answers. You don’t have to believe it, you don’t have to accept it. After all, you have had 15 years of indoctrination from TV and that is a lot to overcome after reading this short article.

We say there are two kinds of cholesterol HDL and LDL.

HDL equals “Good” and LDL equals “Bad”. The simplicity of modern medicine!

In actual fact there is only one kind of cholesterol and it’s all GOOD. It is called cholesterol. The transport mechanism is Lipid Proteins. Cholesterol being a fat needs a vehicle to travel in through water based bloodstream. The High Density Protein transporter, called Good, is the vehicle that is on a mono rail heading straight to the liver to be pump out or expressed out of the body. We call that Good. HDL has other functions enroute like gobbling up LDL cholesterol that may be hanging around and no longer being needed .

Low Density Lipid Proteins on the other hand, have another function. They don’t go to the liver, they go everywhere else …hence we say “Bad”. The unexplained mystery is that these LDL Bad, nasty vehicles carrying the very same cholesterol actually are there for a reason. Cholesterol is basic to human make up and function. There are too many functions to list in this short article but suffice it to say that it is needed in many parts of the body including the brain where neurotransmitters need to be insulated and coated just like the electrical wiring in your home. This is one entirely needed function of cholesterol. So if you don’t get that cholesterol to your brain by the LDL transporters, you begin to develop degenerative problems.

Now, too much of anything can be a bad thing and the fact that LDL gets really out of whack, the body is telling us something. If the LDL in ratio is abnormally high compared to HDL, this is a sign that there are stressors in the body. The body is ordering up the LDL to deal with some serious problems. High blood pressure, hyper tension, high blood sugar, cigarette smoke and other life style issues that we actually have control over. Could it be the LDL is being manufacturered because of a deficiency in Omega-3s?

Let’s use a simple analogy. I get sick. I have a fever. It’s 102 degrees and I feel bad. Is the fever the cause of my sickness or is it a sign, a signal that something is wrong? Do I just treat the fever? Aspirin may make me feel better, but is it curing my illness? Or is the chicken soup (nourishment) actually helping me to overcome whatever ailment is dragging on me? Or ask the next question, why do I have a fever? So with high LDL cholesterol. It begs another question. Why is my LDL high? Instead of settling for a statin to lower the cholesterol (the symptom) unnaturally, why not look a little bit further and find out why the body feels it needs the extra cholesterol to help body function because of the life style stressor? Again, I ask could it be that a deficiency in Omega-3s could be part of the answer?

My contention is that both types of cholesterol are needed. By ingesting lots of Omega-3s, we are actually adding another fat to the body that will make the blood platelettes silkly smooth because this fat has the proper electrical charge to keep the blood from being clumpy. We are providing healthy fats so that the body doesn’t have to restock on LDLs quite as often. People who take a large amount of Omega-3s find that their ratios of HDL and LDL get better even if total cholesterol takes awhile to level out.

Work with your body. Use natural solutions through nutrition. If the situation is acute then by all means use the pharmaceutical products to save life where necessary, but remember its a marathon not a sprint. Those who have been on statins for years find out that their liver functions are impaired and other side effects present themselves. Some doctors are worried about the overprescribing of statins and their long term side effects. One doctor I heard on radio said that this one action of over zealous prescribing of statins might crash our whole health care system in the future.

This is why respected doctors like Dr. Mercola and Dr. Russell Blaylock decry the myth of cholesterol, tell people to avoid statin drugs and beg people to convert to high potency Omega-3s. Not regular fish oil that can be tainted with mercury, but high powered Omega-3s that are molecularly distilled several times to reduce any risk of mercury. Res-Q 1250 is the highest potency product available in the world today and always tests below 1 ppm (1 part per million) making it absolutely safe for human consumption.

It’s extremely difficult to change a mindset that has been conditioned for many years. I only ask you to consider this viewpoint as silly as it may seem.

To your health,

Garey Simmons

PS. Statins inhibit cholesterol being produced in the liver but it also inhibits CoQ10, a catalyst in muscle energy production. This is why you feel tired and fatigued on statins. The heart is a muscle. So here we are medicating for lowering of cholesterol because of fears over heart disease but the medicine is actually robbing the heart of needed energy to pump blood. Go figure! Take lots of Res-Q 1250, you’ve feel better and be better, my humble opinion.

Philosophy of Res-Q

Heart disease: you have a choice. - from N3 Oceanic, makers of the Res-Q line of products.

Presently, there is no “cure” for heart disease. Biological science, in the area of stem-cell research, has begun to tap into the possibilities of actually redefining our DNA in order to eradicate things like heart disease and high blood pressure. Unfortunately, that possibility is not yet available to us.

Prevention and maintenance are currently our best defense against heart-related diseases that may cause heart attacks and strokes. What does that mean? Simply, that lifestyle changes are essential to better health—that eating right, exercising and incorporating a daily regimen of the highest quality heart-healthy supplements into your diet is the best “choice” you can make towards better health.

Why supplement? A brief history of our company.

As Tim Shields, founder of N3 Oceanic, used to say, there are always two sides to the story: theirs and ours. He was referring to the all-natural supplement industry as opposed to the pharmaceutical industry.

Based on years of research devoted to nutrition and heart health in particular, he realized that all-natural ingredients like Omega-3s and antioxidants like lycopene and psyllium (all of which are included in various Res-Q® products) were far more beneficial to the body than the introduction of unnatural, possibly dangerous drugs. To supplement with healthy compounds, occurring organically in nature were, to him, a no-brainer. But in order to gain more clarity and viable information, he researched studies on natural ingredients in only the most prominent journals and magazines in the country—The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of American Medical Associates (JAMA) and the American Heart Association, to name a few.

He discovered what he had set out to discover—support for his “side” of the story.

Here are a few examples:

  1. “Omega-3 fatty acids benefit the heart of healthy people, and those at high risk of — or who have — cardiovascular disease.”
    –American Heart Association
  2. “The [New England Journal of Medicine] found that among men without cardiovascular disease, those with more omega-3 fatty acids in their blood were less likely to die of sudden cardiac death.”
    –New England Journal of Medicine
  3. “Stanford researchers, on the basis of a National study, estimate that Americans made 425 million visits to alternative health care providers in 1990, a figure that exceeded the number of visits to allopathic primary care physicians during the same period by almost 100 million visits! (Forty seven (47) percent of these physicians also reported using alternative therapies themselves, while 23% incorporated them into their practices.)

What is surprising is the reasons people gave for using Alternative medicine. According to the JAMA article, the two most frequently endorsed benefits (of alternative care) were, “I get relief for my symptoms, the pain or discomfort is less or goes away, I feel better,” and “The treatment works better for my particular health problem than standard medicine’s.” According to the study author, these responses suggest that the most influential or salient factor in people’s decision to use alternative health care may be its perceived efficacy.”

COMPARATIVE CAUSES OF DEATH.

ANNUAL AVERAGE IN THE U. S.

With the advancing use of statins (prescription drugs designed to lower cholesterol) and their undeniably devastating side effects—liver damage, myopathy (muscle tissue damage), peripheral neuropathy (tingling and numbness), memory loss and death to name a few, Dr Shields began a 20-year campaign to educate consumers on the all-natural approach to preventing and maintaining heart disease and other health-related issues by creating his own brand of exclusive supplements.

But promotion of general supplementing was tricky. With literally thousands of dietary supplements being sold on an unregulated market, there was oftentimes little certainty when it came to trusting a manufacturer. In order to avoid unreliable manufacturing processes, Dr. Shields traveled the world in search of top manufacturers that ONLY developed products based on the Federal Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and ONLY used the purest, most potent ingredients. The end result was unprecedented. In three short years, after the introduction of Res-Q 1250® and other proprietary Res-Q® products, N3 Oceanic had a customer base of 125,000. Positive testimonials were pouring in, crediting Res-Q® products with amazing results.

The health benefits that come from supplementing with exceedingly quality-based products are unquestionable—from restoring energy, balance and overall well-being to possibly even reducing the risk of heart disease. The late Dr. Shields understood that. He built his life upon it.

N3 Oceanic continues to build upon his tradition by adding new and advanced products on a continual basis. We continue to maintain and surpass the highest standards in quality and productivity, making the goal of better health through supplementing one of the best choices you’ll ever make.

The fish oil quality test

The Fish Oil Quality Test - Here’s How to Demonstrate the Quality of Your Fish Oil!

Dear Marci,
I thought I would share with you a purity/quality test for fish oil that my cardiologist gave to me. He stated that you place a capsule of the fish oil you are using on a plate into a freezer over night. The next morning, after 8 hours in the deep freeze, you cut the capsule in half. If the fish oil is fully fluid/liquid, and when you pour all the fish oil onto a plate, and there are NO other solids or waste material in the fluid, then you have high quality very pure fish oil. The more solid mass the frozen fish might have, the less pure the fish oil is.I tried the test with the ResQ I have.

AND, WOW, the RESQ was fully fluid after 2 days in the freezer. My brother uses “Nature’s *****” fish oil. I placed one of the Nature *****’s fish oil capsules into the freezer over night and half of the fish oil in the capsule the next morning was not fluid, but had “stuff” mixed in with the fluid. About half was fluid, and the other half was milky solid forms.

I mentioned the results to my doc, and he mentioned that meant the “other” fish oil capsule had “fish by products,” included in the fish oil. You may want to try this test out with other fish oils to prove it yourself…..You may want to include it in your advertisements after you see the results of the tests yourself….

Roger …

One of your customers

Comment from Garey: Roger thanks for the great tip! The reason Res-Q 1250 will win over others every time is that it is molecularly distilled so that the capsules contain two and a half times more Omega-3s than any other regular fish oil capsules. All impurities are removed. This is also the reason most people find there is little or no “repeating” and rarely a stomach upset which claim cannot be made by others. You will also notice the Res-Q 1250 is very light in color whereas other versions are rather “dark”. I really am grateful for this “easy to perform at home” experiment to see that we mean what we say when we say Res-Q 1250 is the best. Thanks again for sharing! .
